I know. It hurts.

You want to see your child, to hear his voice, to know he is well and happy.
But you cannot. And you just miss him so terribly much.

And the pain. The pain is just too much sometimes…

Should I trust a psychic medium?

I kind of don’t want to write this post because it covers a topic well outside my personal experience.  But, I have been asked about this and I know there are many  among the bereaved who do seek to contact their deceased loved ones by engaging the services of mediums, spiritualists, psychics, necromancers and the like.

But I will not.  Here’s why:

  1. God forbids it.
  2. I refuse to be exploited by someone who is a fake at best and a channel for demonic entities at worst.
  3. I will not allow someone who engages in this type of wickedness to become part of something as personal and intimate as the loss of our son.  I will not have his name bandied about in this manner.  I will not allow his memory to become a mockery in the spirit world or a commodity for evil in this one.
  4. It would be beyond horrifying to hear a demon counterfeiting the voice of our Hans.
  5. I will not expose myself to or subject my family to the influence of unclean spirits.
  6. “Feeling better” after being exploited like this would not help me.  Allowing myself to be lied to or deceived for the purpose of obtaining false comfort is destructive, not healing.
  7. I should be focusing on communing with God, not on trying to get Hans back.  Why would I ask a demon for questionable information about Hans when I can have the Truth from God – the One Whom Hans is actually with?
  8. Hans would not want me to.

Can a psychic medium help me?

The argument in favor of engaging the services of a medium usually goes something like this: “I felt so much better afterwards.  I know I talked to my deceased loved one.  The psychic had very accurate information.  She knew things no one else could know.”

Where do psychic mediums get their information?

This is actually worse than being duped by a skillful confidence predator.  I would rather be tricked by a sneaky swindler than be in actual contact with a lying demon.  You must ask the question: Where did this inside information come from?  Since God forbids this sort of thing, He is not about to give special, private information to people who are profiting by disregarding His Word.  So then, from what entity did this information come, if not from God?  There is only one other being to consider and that being’s name is Satan.

Satan is not your friend.

Satan does not know everything like God does.  But he does know plenty.  He is around and he is looking for people to destroy.  That is what Satan does, that is who he is – the Destroyer, and he will use any tool at his disposal.  He has no scruples about exploiting and deceiving the crushed heart of a grieving mother.  In fact he is delighted to do so.

What does the Bible say about psychic mediums?

“Whether the phenomena are evidences of a clever trickster, demonic activity, or the staid and serious pronouncement of the scientific community, the Bible calls all of it an abomination.   Deuteronomy 18:9-14 says,

When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you. You shall be blameless before the LORD your God. For those nations, which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so. (emphasis added)

“If the Old Testament saints were commanded not to seek mediums, spiritists, and the like, it’s even more emphatic that clairvoyance has no place in the life of a Christian. A Christian has a personal relationship with the Father through the Lord Jesus Christ, is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and can read and discern the mind of God in the Holy Scriptures.”

John MacArthur, Grace To You: Does the Bible take a position on clairvoyance and parapsychology?

I know you just want to know your child is O.K.  I know you would give anything just to have five more minutes with him.  Your heart is hurting and you just don’t know how you can bear never hearing his voice again. You know people who have gone to a medium and nothing bad seemed to happen afterwards.

But ignoring the clear command of God is never a good idea.

Please – don’t do it.

  5. As a Christian, I look at everything through the lens of Scripture. There are many who read my blog who do not believe in the Bible; therefore, it is difficult to address the issue of seeking counsel from the demonic. Do you have any suggestions on how to approach this delicate topic?

    1. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14

But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16

Sadly, the vast majority of people whom we seek to rescue from demonic involvement cannot and will not heed the warning. Obeying God’s commandment in this or any other matter, starts with believing that He IS and then believing what He says. Apart from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the unregenerate will do as they please – their mind fully convinced (and deceived) that there is no harm in such practices. So, the first and best thing to do is to pray. We can respectfully speak the truth in love, present them with the gospel and show them what God has to say about occult involvement. But only the Holy Spirit can open the understanding and the heart to receive the things of God.

Yes. Faith is all we need. Going to mediums and psychics can really mess with our minds and and put us in the wrong path. I am so sorry to hear about all your losses. Having faith and living in the now is a good way to go.

  8. A Powerful Message Kim with much Truth and good Godly advice, Thank you, the seeds you have planted will bear good fruit because God asks who will contend with Him against evil and who will Stand up for His Truth, His Words will not return to Him empty and we have His assurance The Battle is His and He will be Victorious.

I was involved with the Occult which is Satan’s Playground, as a young woman before I became a Christian, perhaps you would like to read my Message Kim which is also a warning to others, I will leave my Link below in case you would. But I will share now that I was told by a Medium that I would die on my second Trip Overseas, I have traveled Overseas much more than twice and you may have noticed I’m still alive but yes on the second Trip we hit turbulence and I was almost sitting in Ron’s Lap, the planted seed of evil bore fruit, I was so scared but we prayed and I calmed down, mind control is very dangerous which is what the Occult and New Age is all about.

    1. Anne, I am always grateful for testimonies such as yours, of people who have repented of involvement in the occult. This stuff is everywhere and the lie that it is harmless (like yoga, for example) is just that – a lie – from the father of lies who delights in destroying people’s lives. For more on yoga and on the occult in general see: https://www.thebereancall.org/search/content/yoga
Thank you so much, Anne, for your comments.

Excellent post and brimming with God’s word and truth. I saw a medium decades ago when my son was diagnosed with cancer as a baby. I knew deep down it was wrong but I went anyway, stupid me. I was a young desperate mother ignoring God’s truth. The word of God dealt with me about that little excursion shortly after. I needed to put my trust in him and not man for my son. They all say that they’re hearing from God, but they are not. The god they are hearing from is the god of this world not the Holy God of the Bible and that is Satan along with his demons. One must remember or at least be taught that Satan has seen everything that your child or loved one has done on this Earth. So he supernaturally is able to speak through a psychic medium who has given themselves over to the occult by the mere practice, about a loved one. That is how it works that is how he convinces people that it must be real and from God because how could they possibly know that my son or daughter, loved one etc. gave me this or that special gift, or this or that happened on a special day, so on and so forth. It is Supernatural when you speak to a stranger and they tell you of things that they couldn’t possibly know, but take heed, it comes from the very pit of Hell and all that Satan is aware of about that person who has walked the face of the Earth. The Word of God is very clear about psychics, mediums, fortune-tellers astrology numerology and the like. We as believers are to have absolutely nothing to do with them. BTW the psychic that I saw also claimed to be saved. She spoke of Jesus and God. Once again, another Jesus, another God a different gospel. The God of the Bible is also very clear about not communicating with the Dead. If one has a smartphone they have a little computer in their hand and any of these scriptures can be looked up. The Bible is free on line as well. There’s so much information at the touch of our fingers these days we are without excuse unless one is just determined to make one.

    1. Cathleen, you have said so much here that is so important and that carries a lot of weight because you are speaking from experience. I want to thank you for sharing your testimony and for taking the time to spell out the Truth in no uncertain terms.

  10. TY!! There are few speaking out against this because it really angers some on the grief sites. I hate this topic..it so often causes division, however, it must be spoken against. Here is what I wrote in regards to this some time ago. It is an excerpt from my book: ‘Gifts from the Ashes. God bless you, KIm. I’ve really been blessed by many of your articles. bereavedparentsblog

  11. Joshuas Mom

Thank You for writing this article.
I struggled badly with this temptation for a long time after my sons passing, needing desperately to talk to him, to know he was ok, to know he wasn’t mad at me for doing it.

He was born with cystic fibrosis, had a double lung transplant in 2008, and organ rejection required they put him into a drug induced coma and intubate him in 2011. I begged God for 3 weeks to let a new set of lungs compatable with him to be found, (yes, i knew what that meant for someone else 😦 .)
After 3 weeks I had to make the most horrible decision a parent would ever have to make….to remove him from life support.
He had just gotten married 1 week prior to the coma…..my Joshua was 24.

I’m not exactly sure why I never went through with seeing a medium…heaven knows I was so ANGRY at God and didn’t care what He wanted…but I was also fighting another temptation too, the temptation to join him.
The temptation was so strong one day, that I looked to the heavens and I begged God to give me a sign, to let me know Josh was alright and with Him, if He didn’t want me ending it all…I HAD TO KNOW!!!

I immediately felt an immense calmness sweep over me, a rush of great relief, a terrible burden being lifted from my shoulders, and I knew that Joshua was alright, and that God had him. Ever since, I no longer struggled with wanting to see a medium or ending my life.

I still struggle with the loneliness of not having him here with me, of holding him, of having him walk up to me, throw his arms around my neck and out of nowhere, just say “I love you Mom”….but it’s no longer an oppressive burden on my shoulders

God’s got this, and all I need to do is remember that I WILL see, talk to and hold my Son again someday…. all I need to do is to listen to and follow God!!!

    1. I am so completely moved by your story and I can’t thank you enough for sharing it. You have walked a very hard road and you have my deepest sympathy and respect. The “immense calmness…the rush of great relief” that you speak of – God did this for me, too – a blessed and amazing experience. I am so happy that you have turned this over to our Father in Heaven and that He has met you in your struggles and given you the victory. Like you, I have to remind myself, sometimes out loud: I WILL see Hans again, he is safe and happy, the separation is temporary. I am looking forward to meeting you and your sweet Joshua someday, in God’s time.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I’VE NEED TO READ I’VE ALSO CONTEMPLATED ON SEEING A MEDIUM JUST SO I COULD KNOW MY DAUGHTER IS OK AND HEAR HER VOICE ONE MORE TIME. Now I do under stand I will just trust in God that she is with him as she was when he allowed me to have her when she was born and grateful for the 36 years. Now she is at peace. I believe I will see her again in God’s time.

Nice blog. I run into this often. Remember this too: “Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.”
‭‭1 Chronicles‬ ‭10:13-14‬ ‭NIV‬‬ This recorded in 1st Samuel 28 where is seeks the medium. Thank you for writing this. ~Roger

      1. I know Saul’s story did not have a happy ending. He sought truth where God told him not to go, but God did not kill him. I believe that he took his own life when his armor assistant would not. The Bible does not use the word, suicide, but Saul’s end was suicide, and yet, he was given a kingly, dignified burial. So as a side note from a mother who lost her son to suicide, this example tells me that God does not look upon this death the way society does.

        1. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. 1 Chronicles 10:4

So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it; And inquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse. 1 Chronicles 10:13-14

Looking at what is recorded in the Scriptures, we see that both things are true: Saul died at his own hand (suicide) and God slew him. This is how the Lord dealt with Saul.
This is NOT to say that every suicide is God killing someone because they have committed some terrible sin. No one but Almighty God knows the heart and the heavy, heavy pain that may lead someone to take his own life. You are right, God sees it all in a way that others cannot. When we get to Heaven, we will see it, too. ❤️

  14. Hi I have a friend who is a medium from my old days when I did have readings and although he understands my wishes to follow God did give me some helpful advice.

I learnt to take that with a pinch of salt as at that time the devil was trying to lead me away from God for letting me lose our baby at 35 weeks and I felt like a carrot had been dangled in my face and taken away something so precious.

Months on and I am finding my feet with God again and stuff is coming into my life that I never knew I would be able to do.

So thank you for the post and I shall continue to read your blogs x
