Acts 9:1-2NASB
“NowSaul, stillbreathingthreats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,and asked forletters from him tothe synagogues atDamascus, so that if he found any belonging tothe Way, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.”
“…So that if he found any belonging to the Way, both men and women…”
The Way.
The first Jewish followers of Jesus called themselves disciples of “the Way,” a name that echoes Jewishhalakha,the “way of life” enshrined in the Torah, as well as the disciples’ belief that Jesus was “the way” to God the Father.
Later, in Antioch, as the gentiles accepted the Gospel of Jesus Christ, believers began to be known as “Christians” (Acts 11:26).
I can’t help but feel a certain fondness for the terminology of “the Way”…
