Why I Love the Old Hymns

Psalms 13:6 – I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

I love the old hymns of the faith. It’s not just a personal preference. The old hymns are a major part of my growth as a Christian.

From the first Sunday we stepped into a Bible teaching church over thirty years ago as completely non-singing newbies, the old hymns instructed our growing family in a deep and edifying process. Our children would come home, preach to their teddy bears and then sing what they could remember.

Gradually, after singing five hymns Sunday mornings, three on Sunday evening, and three on Wednesday night, we were assimilating some deep theological truths. We sang so much that we were exposed to many of the hymns numerous times. This greatly added to our growth as individuals and as a family.

When I am singing an old hymn, I am singing with the saints below and it is wonderful. But it goes deeper than that. I am acutely aware that I am also singing with the redeemed above. There’s a lot of singing going on up there and I love that I can sing with them, too.

I sing with Believers that have been through trials, persecutions, joys and sorrows. Hundreds of years of Christian experience. I can unite with them in a very real way. It is a joy.

And now that Hans can actually carry a tune, I sing with him, too.

I pray we don’t lose the old great hymns of the faith.

Thanks for visiting!

So… SO TRUE, Kim! Today, May 10th is the anniversary of my twins’ (Faith and Hope) delivery to Jesus (Mother’s Day, 1987). They were VERY FAMILIAR with many hymns before they were “born”!I look forward to the day so
