Memorial Day

Though my Father served in the United States Air Force, I do not come from a particularly military family.

Our son, Hans, did not serve in the military, but, as a volunteer firefighter/medic, he was given firefighter’s honors at his memorial service.  To be honest, I was floored.  I did not expect such an honor. I was tremendously thankful and so very proud of my boy.

So, I am one of those mothers who have been presented with a folded up American flag, something I never in a million years would have thought would be my lot.

This Memorial Day, I want to remember the fallen. I also wish to remember the wives and mothers who have lost a loved one in service to our country.

Because I know what it feels like to be handed that folded up flag.

Thank you.
