A Living Redeemer, A Sure Hope

This world holds few guarantees. Here's One you can depend on. "Job was taught of God to believe in a living Redeemer; to look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come; he comforted himself with the expectation of these. Job was assured, that this Redeemer of sinners from …

Still Waters

The Twenty-Third Psalm A Psalm of David The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley …

Letter to a Stricken Soul -A.W. Pink

My dear brother, My heart goes out to you in sympathy in this dark hour, and I feel my helplessness to comfort you. The loss you have sustained is far greater than any human creature can make up--your suffering is too acute for any fellow-mortal to alleviate. I may endeavor to pour into your sorely-wounded …

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

"...streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise." https://youtu.be/KOWqMwqzUjM Hans' Favorite Hymn In 1752, a young Robert Robinson attended an evangelical meeting to heckle the believers and make fun of the proceedings. Instead, he listened in awe to the words of the great preacher George Whitefield, and in 1755, at the age …

Sorrow, God’s Plowshare

"When sorrow comes under the power of Divine grace, it works out a manifold ministry in our lives. Sorrow reveals unknown depths in the soul, and unknown capabilities of experience and service. Walk, Don’t Run.

Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. Ecclesiastes 7:3 When you are sitting there alone and you are weeping, and the longing for your child is a thick and expanding heaviness in your chest threatening to erupt from your throat in silent, choking grief. When …

Death is a Change of Place

A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth. Ecclesiastes 7:1 A believer's last day is his best day! His dying-day is better than his birthday! This is a very sweet and useful truth to all believers. Death is a change of place. When a …

When Prayer is Hard: Pain, Peace and the Groaning Heart

The peace God offers us when we pray, does not necessarily mean an absence of pain. It is more of a resting in the sorrow while trusting God for the answers to questions that would otherwise torment us. Peace means ceasing from striving against what God has allowed in our lives and in the lives of our children. It is giving over what we want and receiving what God has willed. It is letting go of what could have been and accepting what is.

Prayer for a Time of Bereavement

John MacDuff, from "Family Prayers" 1885 The desire of our eyes has been taken away by a stroke! The shadows of death have unexpectedly fallen around us! Oh forbid that we should rebel under the rod, and refuse to be comforted. Let us glorify You "in the fires!" Let us feel that if we are Your children, there …
