Death is a Change of Place

A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth. Ecclesiastes 7:1 A believer's last day is his best day! His dying-day is better than his birthday! This is a very sweet and useful truth to all believers. Death is a change of place. When a …

An Untimely Death?

J.R. Miller (1840 - 1912), 'Morning Thoughts' And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought:and he went and beheaded him in the prison...Mark 6:27 Jesus knows how His followers can best serve Him. He sent the apostles out to teach and heal. John the Baptist, however, He permitted to be …

“The Altar” by George Herbert

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Psalm 51:17 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. Psalm 28:7 George …

A Villequier by Victor Hugo

Inconsolable: “A Villequier” by Victor Hugo

Nothing cheery about this rather long poem but I love how the words are put together to describe the depth and complexity of the pain of child loss. "Do not be irritated that I am like this,O my God! this wound bled for so long! The anguish in my heart is still the strongest thing, and my …

Anticipation

...having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Philippians 1:23 "Death, to the believer, is but passing out of a world of sorrow and of sin — and entering upon a world of indescribable glory! If we lived more in anticipation of the happiness that waits us — …

God, Thou Art Love

If I forget, yet God remembers. If these hands of mine cease from their clinging,Yet the hands divine hold me so firmly, I cannot fall. And if sometimes I am too tired to call for Him to help me,Then He reads the prayer unspoken in my heart and lifts my care. I dare not fear since certainly …

When Prayer is Hard: Pain, Peace and the Groaning Heart

The peace God offers us when we pray, does not necessarily mean an absence of pain. It is more of a resting in the sorrow while trusting God for the answers to questions that would otherwise torment us. Peace means ceasing from striving against what God has allowed in our lives and in the lives of our children. It is giving over what we want and receiving what God has willed. It is letting go of what could have been and accepting what is.

Hold My Hand While We Limp to Jerusalem

For the person desiring to comfort a sufferer… “The sufferer says, ‘I know it’s been a long time; I’m sorry. I’m not enjoying the prolonged nature of this trial, but I appreciate your understanding and your willingness to stick with me. Thank you for weeping when I weep. Someday, a time will come when we can rejoice together at the marriage supper of the Lamb. Until that time, please be there for me, keep in contact with me, let me cry on your shoulder, and hold my hand while we limp to Jerusalem.’ -Kim Dunkelberger

The blessing of Christian fellowship is a wonderful gift! God “comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted” (2 Corinthians 1:3-5). Sometimes though, it is difficult to know how best to offer this comfort even when there is a sincere desire to do so.

Quite Suddenly

Quite suddenly, It may be at the turning of a lane, Where I stand to watch a skylark soar From out of the swelling grain, That the trump of God shall thrill me, With its call so loud and clear, And I'm called away to meet Him, Whom of all I hold most dear. Quite …

Blessings of Bereavement

Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word. Psalm 119:67 BLESSINGS OF BEREAVEMENT by J. R. Miller, 1896 At first we would be disposed to say that no blessings can come out of bereavements. But the grace of God has such wondrous power, that even from the saddest desolating of …
